Hospital in the Rock

“Fantastic and thoughtful experience!”

This place was the last hospital in operation during the siege in Buda between 12.1944-02.1945 and that was the second longest city siege in that war. Thousands of people, soldiers and civilians alike were treated here. The tour includes parts that were built and extensively used during the Second World War and the siege of Budapest.  During the cold war the hospital was extended and upgraded to atomic bunker and was classified as “Top Secret” under the codename 0101/1.

The witness of history: It is very rare that a complete military hospital and bunker opens its gates to the public. The speciality of this installation is that it is not merely a museum or a bunker planned for use in case of a conflict. It was the witness of the world war as well as the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as an operational hospital.

Buda Castle – a prominent location: The Hospital in the Rock is located in the Buda Castle, the former governing district, just two minutes walk from the famous Matthias church. Therefore its prominent location and accessibility makes it even more attractive for the tourists including those who have just a few days in the city as well as those who have already visited Budapest before but want to see something really new and unique.

Exhibitions:
The hospital is furbished including historical furniture and equipment. Moreover wax figures with original clothing and postures create a living – and thrilling – atmosphere making the entire exhibition to be felt like living history. It contains the largest number of wax figures fielded in Central Europe. The concept is to provide an intense visual experience that really moves the visitors thus providing a truly remarkable experience. Civil defence exhibition is also arranged in the facility that includes tools and materials to protect from chemical or thermonuclear attack.

Visitors: According to the experience everyone finds the visit interesting, but sometimes for different reasons. It is nostalgic for one, interesting new experience for another, technical curiosity for the third with all that machinery from the 1960’s that still provide power and ventilation for the hospital.

Conditions: Tours depart in every hour. The tour length is 70 minutes for the entire exhibition.

Incentive programs:
1. Cold war wargames to experience the official protocol of the hospital in case of usage of weapons of mass destruction.
2. Quest games to find items and persons in the facility and solve problems in groups etc.

Meetings & events: In individual locations of the Hospital in the Rock that are suitable for outside logistics to be brought in, there is the opportunity for corporate events, projections, presentations, receptions, concerts and filming. A 50-person reception hall is available with the possibility of seating, sound amplification and projectors. A 100-person, 144 sqm reception hall can be rented for standing receptions or seated programmes with your own furniture.
